NFC stands for Near Field Communication (opens in a new tab), the same short-range technology behind tap-to-pay. Inside the card sits a small chip and antenna. When a phone with NFC comes within a few centimetres, it powers the chip for a moment and reads what's stored on it.
On a business card, what's stored is usually just a web link: the address of your digital visiting card. The phone sees the link and offers to open it. There's no battery and no charging, so nothing wears out except the card itself.
Most mid-range and flagship Android phones sold in the last few years have NFC. Many budget phones don't, and some people keep NFC switched off in settings (opens in a new tab). On iPhones, the iPhone XS, XR and later can read NFC tags in the background (opens in a new tab) without opening any app.
In practice, NFC works for many, but not all, of the people you'll meet. That's why a good NFC card always carries a QR code on the back. Tap if the phone supports it, scan if it doesn't, and nobody is left out.
Wake and unlock the phone
Phones look for NFC tags only while the screen is on and the phone is in use. Android phones usually need to be unlocked, and a locked iPhone asks to be unlocked before it opens the link.

The NFC antenna usually sits near the camera on iPhones and around the middle-back on many Androids. Hold the card there for a second.
Open the notification
A pop-up or notification appears with your link. One tap opens your card.
Prices depend mostly on the material. Printed PVC visiting cards with an NFC chip are the most affordable and feel like a bank card. Metal and wooden NFC cards look more premium and cost more.
